Overview:
Elmer is an open source finite element multiphysics simulation package developed by the CSC, IT Center for Science, administered by the Minisitry of Education of Finland. Development of Elmer has been ongoing since 1995 and the code offers a wealth of capabilities as well as a graphic interface and post-processing tools. The code also runs on multiple platforms (Linux, Mac OSX, Windows).
Applications:
Multiphysics finite element codes provide the ability to couple different physical interactions into a single example. For example, one could consider a wire on a chip, calculate the current flowing through and determine the heat generated from it. From this, the thermal expansion of the wire could then be determined. Due to this ability to link different phenomena, this approach can be a power tool in fields such as:
- MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems)
- Microfluidics
- Heat transfer
- Vibroacoustics (pressure fields around a tuning fork)
- Czochralski Crystal Growth
- Glacier and Ice Sheet Modeling
- Electromagnetics

The development of the Elmer code was originally part of a Finnish national program coordinated by the Technology Development Centre of Finland from 1995-1999. Elmer is currently developed and maintained by the CSC - IT Center for Science.
