International REU

A Second Summer Opportunity for our Most Outstanding NNIN REU Participants

Oct. 22,  2014: Applications for the NNIN International REU program have been sent to 2014 NNIN REU Participants. Only 2014 NNIN REU participants are eligible for this program. If you did not recieve an application, please contact Lynn Rathbun.

Our regular REU program is highly selective; Approximately 1 in 7 applicants will be offered an internship and 80-90 students will actually participate. Over 15 years of experience has shown that these students are well positioned for follow-on internships and are highly valued by industry, graduate schools, and other internship programs.

In light of this fact, we have taken pains to develop our own follow-on program, to give a special opportunity to the most select of our REU participants. Approximately ten to fifteen of the very best students to complete the NNIN REU program each year will be selected for a second year advanced research program at a major international laboratory.

Our international partners for this program have included:

  • The National Institute of Materials Science in Tsukuba, Japan
  • The Institut Fur Bio- Und Nanosysteme (IBN) at the  Forschungszentrum, Julich, in Germany
  • The Kavli Institute for Nanosciences at the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft)in the Netherlands
  • The Centre Microelectronique de Provence, Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Saint Etienne in France
  • Interuniversity Microelectronics Center (IMEC), Leuven, Belgium

This is part of an effort to educate Globally Aware Scientists, a necessity in this multinational research environment. The students conduct an advanced research project in nanoscience for 10 weeks, similar to an REU project, but under the direction of a senior scientist at the international laboratory. The participants also are immersed in a foreign culture, in a foreign laboratory, with fellow scientists from around the world.  There is ample opportunity to travel on the weekends. Students who participate in this program not only conduct excellent research , they come away with a much broader understanding of the world of scientific research and with expanded confidence in their ability to work and interact in the expanded international environment.

Note this opportunity is ONLY available to students who have completed our NNIN REU program. There are no exceptions.

Essentially we are using our REU program as a filter to select the very best for these exciting opportunities. We believe this is a unique opportunity, which will give a significant career boost to our best performing REU interns. Information on applying to the NNIN iREU program will be distributed to all eligible participants (the prior year’s REU students) during October of each year.  Applications will be due in November or December, with notification of selection in January.

This program is supported by NNIN Cooperative Agreement funds.
